Manitoba Budget Backs Churchill As Key Northern Trade Hub

Port of Churchill and Hudson Bay Railway Offer Key Trade Alternative Amid Global Uncertainty: Arctic Gateway Group

Arctic Gateway Group (AGG) welcomes the Manitoba government’s commitment to the Port of Churchill and Hudson Bay Railway in yesterday’s provincial budget. This investment underscores Churchill’s growing role as a vital trade and logistics hub, offering Canada strategic alternatives amid ongoing trade tensions with the U.S. and increasing global uncertainty.

“The Port of Churchill and Hudson Bay Railway are ready to provide Canada with an essential northern trade corridor, reducing dependence on southern routes and strengthening national resilience,” said Chris Avery, CEO, AGG. “Thanks to the foresight of our local, Indigenous ownership group and government partners, we are in a position to step up and help Canadian businesses and families in this time of American uncertainty - Churchill’s role in securing Canada’s supply chains has never been more important.”

As Canada’s only rail-connected, deep-water Arctic port, the Port of Churchill offers access to global markets, cutting shipping times to Europe and beyond. Continued investments in critical minerals storage, grain handling, and rail modernization ensure the Port is ready to handle increasing volumes of exports. The Town of Churchill is also well positioned to support Arctic sovereignty and northern defense, with existing infrastructure that includes a major port, rail link, and one of northern Canada’s largest airstrips.

AGG, an Indigenous - and community-owned partnership, has rebuilt the railway to its best condition in decades, cutting transit times by 10% and introducing modern monitoring railway monitoring technologies to keep the railway strong in ways that weren’t possible in the past. The Port is already seeing increased demand, with growing shipments of critical minerals and new import and export partnerships to help Canadian agricultural producers diversify and strengthen their supply chains.

“Arctic Gateway is ready to take on a greater role in Canada’s trade and security future, growing the northern economy and creating good northern jobs,” added Avery.
